Iowa Speedway Night

tonight was our 1st night out of the year. We were using a motor built by us with the help of Carlson Racing engines. We couldnt build  any power like we had expected to, and we kept adding rear gear to try to get engine RPM. The car slowed more and more as the night went on. Post race inspection found a faulty throttle cable, not allowing the throttle to fully open. The repairs were made, we will see results next week hopefully.

We had repaired the faulty throttle cable, and still couldnt seem to build any speed. Joshua's foot has been in a walking cast for nearly 6 weeks after a fractured ankle, and he states that his foot hurts and he must lift some in the corners, more than usual.

A post race inspection was done, using our newly acquired computerized scale system. Cross, or "wedge" as the NASCAR guys refer to it should be, in our case, in the neighborhood of 55 percent. A difference of 1-2% is a BIG difference in that adjustment. We found ours to be at 78 1/2% !  That would cause a situation where weight would not be able to transfer in the corners. The necessary adjustment have been made to the chassis to correct the weight distribution/ Hopefully it will allow the car to work better.

RESULTS:

A-Main 01 --  1. Kelby Watt, Adel; 2. Alexis Mills, Altoona; 3. McKenna Haase;; 4. Joshua Moffitt, Des Moines; 5. Bailee Showers;; 6. Maggie Leavitt;; 7. Morgan Dennis;.

With the chassis setup more like it should be, Joshua claimed the car drove VERY well, but just didn't seem to have the motor it should have. I could tell that from track-side, too. Another team had offered to loan us a motor to try. During our 10 minute intermission, we attempted a swap. As we were putting thee replacement engine on the chassis, we discovered the header on the  replacement engine would not fit with our tail section, and we could not get the header loose. So we attempted to put our motor back on. We got it on and could not get it to run well enough to get to the starting grid for the A Main.

Post race inspection found that the carburetor had worked loose and become completely un-attached, that explains the power loss and the hard starting condition.  We went ahead and used the borrowed engine for next week's competition, we are having more mechanical "gremlins" than we would like. We felt that this was one way to help sort things out.

with the engine borrowed from the 5j team of Scotty Johnson on the car, we went out for Hot Laps. The clutch failed immediately upon opening the throttle. Joshua went to the infield. Repairs were made and re-gearing done as necessary, and at the beginning of heat 2, the chain failed. The chain was bent from the incident in hot laps. A chain was fabricated from parts in the toolbox, and Joshua went to the grid. The poor finishes of the night put Josh in the last starting position. As the race unfolded, Bailee Showers was racing in the low groove where Josh's car was setup to run best. He worked the high side, and eventually overtook her. His faster laps were consistent with the times ran by the #2 finishing car, but there wasn't any time to gain track position. Josh came off teh track smiling, the car feelt great. We enjoyed a Mountain Dew  together and look forward to next week.
