2009 RACING SEASON

all the action outlined here for 2009 !

BOXSTOCK CLASS !

Joshua moved up a class this year. The cars are referred to as BoxStocks, or Modifieds, depending on your territory. Modified is the more accurate term, these are mid-50 MPH Rockets powered by methanol burning blueprinted 4 cycle engines. The difference between these cars and the cars last year is primarily the lack of a restrictor plate. That means, too, that the engine isn't capable of turning the RPM that these new cars turn, so the cam, valve train, and carburetor all change when you change a class. The restrictor plate class is a very important tool for these kids, as they need to learn control and safety before moving up. This is the next step, and these kids are pretty serious about what they do !  There are also quite a few of them in this class, so the racing should be great.

Please enjoy the results as they happen.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS :

Friday                    April 24                        point race #1

Heat 1 -  3rd place

Trophy Dash - 1st Place

Feature 4th place

heat 1 - Joshua started in the final starting spot, but quickly worked his way through the field, and ran 2nd most of the race, closely chasing the 5 car of Katelyn Smith from Beacon Ia. Several times it looked like he was going to be able to pass Katelyn, but she hung on for the win. Joshua "the Rocket" Moffitt's car looked very strong out of the turns, but the 11 car of Colten Roorda, Sully Ia. was able to come out of turn 4 down the front chute on the final lap to pass Joshua at the flag stand for a photo finish, leaving Joshua in 3rd place. It was a very good race, a real nail biter, especially at the end. The finish was so close, Joshua wasn't sure, but he kind of thought he maintained 2nd place.

Trophy Dash - Since we started in the final starting position on the 1st heat, the start was inverted for the trophy dash, giving us the opportunity to start in 1st position for the trophy dash. Joshua's position was challenged a couple times , but hung on for the win with a strong battle directly behind him between the 5 and 12 cars of Smith and Brooke "the Little Magician" Mitrisin

Feature Event - Joshua started 3rd in a field of 13 cars registered for the night. 12( I believe) were able to start the feature. Joshua was placed in 3rd starting position, based on his finishes in the earlier events today. There were 12 cars on the track in a hotly contested event, Joshua was running in 4th and 5th position most of the race. There were several caution flags during the event for spun cars on the track, and on a couple of those, Joshua made a good run at the 3rd place car of K Smith, and was at one time challenged by the 12 car of Brooke Mitrisin, but Joshua hung on to 4th place. Not a bad finish, especially given the level of competition amongst these kids. They are very competitive, talented young people "wheeling" pretty technically advanced racing machines. A lot of these kids have strong heritage in Open Wheel Racing. Names like Leavitt, Mitrisin, Ergenbright are all involved in this sport with their younger generations. This will be a class this year, I believe, where most any team could win on any given night.

Friday                    May 8                          point race # 3
Joshua finished 3 in his 1st heat, and second in the 2nd heat. That offered him a starting spot 2nd row inside in the feature event.
In the feature event, Joshua was running 3rd behind 2 time class champion Brooke Mitirisin and grandson of 2 time Knoxville Nationals winner Eddie Leavitt. Josh was "dicing" with Ryan Leavitt, and was a little faster in turn 3 and 4 and down the front straight, and Ryan was a little faster in 1 and 2 and down the back chute. Josh was able to just start to come under Ryan Leavitt going into turn 2, and was unable to make it stick. Eventually, after a few laps of that great racing, Joshua slowed on the back stretch, and eventually coasted to the infield. The chain had broken, and Joshua's great run had ended for the night, forcing him to take last place points for the night, when up until then he had been running right in the front.

Saturday May 9  NEWTON KART KLUB        NEWTON IOWA
We arrived at Newton and found that we were the only Outlaw Kart there. We would need to run our kart in a different class and be scored separately. They wanted us to run with the restrictor plate class that we ran in last year. The only 2 karts that had shown up for that class that day were equipped with the "clone" engines, which are copies of OHV 6.5 HP Honda engines  ...  We asked to instead be put in the class of Speedway Midgets with Yamaha KT100 2 cycle engines. The racing director said we could hot lap with them, and if we didn't get run over too badly by them, we could run on the track with them.  When we hot lapped, we passed a couple of them, so the race director said we could race with the Yamahas. A few of the Yamaha guys came to our pit and assured us that we will need to "stay out of their way" After all, they were racing they said.   I assured them that I was making some changes to our kart that should help us keep up with the class. Our kart had exhibited a "push" coming out of turn 2 in hot laps, and I was working to rectify that. Also there was a midget driver that had pushed us up the track in turn 2 clear up to the grass. I was unsure if that was intenetional or not, but I told Joshua that if that happened again he was to hold his ground, as long as he could do it safely.
We had to start the heat race in the back of the field, since we were a seperate class ( before the race started, on of the Yamaha guys we were racing with said it was because we were so much slower than them)  ... and it was a 6 or an 8 lap event.
We started at the tail and Joshua worked his way to the front. He wound up winning the event !  The same car that had pushed him up the track in hot laps again pushed him up thetrack in the heat race. Later a driver came over and apologized for getting into him a couple times, but said he kind of had to since his car wasnt that fast. ( meaning the yammie midget wasnt that fast)  ... knowing it had been intentional shined a different light on how bad we wanted to race with those guys. A little bit later, therace director came and told us we would have to race with the clones and restrictor plate outlaw class. We went out with them for a heat race, but then, after winningthat heat, we  loaded up our kart and went home.

we had a great day, and got to see how we would perform against the midgets, which have full suspension and high powered engines (and more weight)

Tim Mathes Construction presents Mecher Dallas night at the races

heat 1 - A GREAT night of racing ! Josh drew a number that started him very near the back of a 7 car field. He was making his way through the field nicely. Clinton Van Helton and Kelby Watt were involved in an incident that brough the yellow flag out, bunching up the field for a restart. Thee were a couple restarts, the last of which found young Joshua right behind the leader, Colton Roorda. Josh had worked his way almost through the field, on car left to pass, and 2 laps to go. Green/White/Checker, meaningthe cars would get the Green flag on the start, next lap the white flag would fly, then atthe end of that lap, the checkered flag would fly, spelling the end of the contest.
Restarting behing Colton Roorda of Sully Ia isnt the bestthing to have happen, but that is where you are likely to find the good, harder to pass drivers, up near the front. a 2 lap shootoout with young Mr Roorda is sure to be exciting. We have already had ONE photo finish with him, for 2nd/3rd place in a heat this year, he is a worthy competitor at any track, for sure.   The Green flag is waved, josh lags back jut a tad, and is catching Colton at turn 1, cant get under him, turn 2 he is still trying, they come to 3 and 4 and it looks like Josh may getthe pass coming out, but NO, its not meant to be, the race continues through one and 2, Colton maintains his lead, Josh is working on him, not letting him get away, into 3 and 4 for the last time, coming to the checkers, Josh comes out on top, trying to make the pass, he gets RIGHT beside Colton Roorda at the finish line, he ALMOST gets it done, but not quite ... Colton Roorda finished 1st in that heat, josh 2nd in another near photo finish, the announcer said he won by a wheel !

GREAT RACE BOYS !

the car was disassembled some after this race to find out why our results had fallen off. It was determined that, among other things, the accident we were involved in at the 2009 Outlaw Dirt Kart Nationals had damaged a wheel bearing to the point it would barely roll, and also the brake rotor was slightly warped from that incident, causing quite a bit of extra rolling resistance. We also identified some other problems we didnt know we were having.

SEPTEMBER 27, 2009
FINAL POINTS RACE OF THE SEASON !

This has been an awesome season ! VERY competitve !
We knew going into this year that this class was bulging at the seams with young talent. Out of the 12 or 14 cars that showed up almost every week, at least 10 were capable of winningthe show on any given night. Names that are well respected in the racing community like Watt, Leavitt, Mitrisin, Smith, Roorda, and the list goes on. We have kids in our class whose previous generations literally helped shape sprint car racing as we know it today. We also have the weekend warrior race teams, that just come out to have a little fun.

Going into the last night of racing for the year, we find young Joshua in the points lead, with a very close points battle for the top 4 spots.  Going into the last race of the year, the top 4 look like this:
1 53 Joshua Moffitt 1185
2 5 Katelyn Smith 1176
3 1k Kelby Watt 1173
4 22 Ryan Leavitt 1150
That is just 35 points of of nearly 1200 seperating 1st from 4th.  The points season is going to come down to the last A Main, and it should be a great race !

1st heat: Joshua starts at the tail, and works his way to the lead. While leading, his car is loose in turn 2, and he spins. The race is restarted with 2 laps to go, and Josh is able to work his way back into 3rd place, and simply runs out of time to advance further.

Heat 2:  Joshua starts in the front row and is able to maintain that position, winning the final Trophy Dash of the season.

A Main . .  it all comes down to this.  If the 5 car wins, Josh must finish 3rd or better to win the Points Campionship. If the 1k wins, josh should be able to finish 5th or better and if anyone else wins, Josh can finish fairly deep in the field and still win the points deal.
The 5 starts on the pole, and is off to an early lead. The 1k runs 2nd and the 22 of Ryan Leavitt runs 3rd. Josh is running 4th, working on the 22. An EXCELLENT race ensues between those two, and while that is taking place, the 1k overtakes the 5 of Katelyn Smith. Then Joshua overtakes the 22, so the running order is 1k Watt, 5 Smith, 53 Moffitt, 22 Leavitt.  Joshua runs a couple 12.78/12.81 laps (1/6 - 1/5 mile)  after he gets out in "clean air" but there just isnt enough time to catch the 1k and the 5.  The race goes 15 laps without a caution, and the top 4 are WATT, SMITH, MOFFITT, LEAVITT . That seals the deal on a very close and competitive year in 1st place for Joshua.
