MAY 18, 2007

Tonight we faced a "situation". Double dash night, which meant 2 trophy dashes for the top 6 points contenders. Well, that was kinda weird, since that meant the same 6 ran 2 trophy dashes. There was a consolation after the 2nd one for the rest of us, which meant that we ran a heat, a dash, and a feature.

Our heat placed us with the faster kids. These kids can really drive, have their act together pretty good. The #11 car that lapped almost the entire field was in this heat, as well as the 1K car of Kelby Watt, who won a recent, special money night show at English Creek. Well, we actually ran with them pretty much, they didn't run away and hide like I thought they might. I was actually quite happy. Joshua was getting more at home with the car and the track surface, and we raced with those boys. and felt real good about it !

Our Trophy dash pitted us against the drivers that are new this year to this form of racing, and we felt like we had a chance. Remember, this is the 2nd night of racing for a lot of us, at least on this surface, in this car.  We started on the pole, and Joshua an I felt confident that e could run well in this one. Joshua ran several laps out in front and held a substantial lead over the 2nd place car of Katelyn Smith. The yellow flag came out when the 25 car of Alexis Mills spun in turn 2, and the field was lined up for a single file restart.  Upon the  restart, the Dover Power on the #5 car of Smith was too much for Joshua, and she took the lead, and although there were a few battles for the lead, Josh was never able to get in front again. The 25 car spun again, giving Joshua a chance for the Kimple Racing powered Ultramax to take the lead on the restart. Again, Smith proved to be too strong, and Joshua ran second.

On the white flag lap, the 25 car spun one more time, leading to a controversial ending. Joshua came out of turn 4 to collect 2nd place, and the yellow light came on. He backed off the gas, and was passed by the remainder of the field, except the 25 car.  it appears he was scored in last place, but the yellow SHOULD have reverted scoring back to the last completed lap. Then there should have been a green/white/checkered dash for the field, minus the 25 car, as there is a 3 caution rule. After you are involved in 3 cautions in one race, you are sent back to your pit area to resolve the problem with your car.

The feature had the 1st 8 spots inverted, and 9 cars starting, and or some reason, Joshua had to start in 9th position. Back to the controversial ending to the trophy dash, he should have been a little farther up, and with the inversion, started nearer the front. As the race unfolded, it really didn't matter, as I didn't make any alterations to the car except ADDING a few lbs of air pressure, and the tack had changed a fair amount through the night, and regardless of how well Joshua drove the car, ( he did an AMAZING job driving and avoiding incidents that unfolded in front of him) the car just wasn't set up to win on that surface. There was a scoring thing on the restart here, too. Joshua was placed farther up in the field than he should have been.  I tried to explain that to a worker, but the restart continued in that order.

I REALLY hope they get their act together scoring these races. I didn't watch others, but if I saw these  problems for us, I have to imagine they aren't isolated incidents.

MAY 25, 2007 .. POINTS MAKE UP RACE.

During the weeks pre race preparation, we identified a mechanical problem that had came the surface apparently during last weeks feature. A lock ring had came loose on the rear axle, allowing the axle to move side to side, eventually causing the wheel to come into contact with the rear bearing hanger. The inside of the wheel was destroyed. I also changed tire stagger and sizes on the RF and LR. When I got to the track, I found that the offending axle problem had destroyed the wheel and the tire would not hold air. I borrowed a wheel from the team of Conner McCarthy, and was able to race. We were also having some mechanical issues, I believe to be a faulty carb diaphragm, and the engine was hard to start and keep running in line, but ran real hard at wide open throttle.

Joshua ran better than he has yet this year with this setup, going hard into the corners and staying on the gas. Look at the results, we had a really good week. We feel great about it.

           June8, 2007

There was some very GOOD racing tonight, Our goal was to move up 1 points spot. We actually picked up 2 spots, for now. These kids are REALLY good racers. The track was VERY wet tonight from recent rains, and took a long time to dry out. That was going to make a very late night, so they combines the trophy dash and heat race, then ran the feature, so we only raced twice tonight. We rolled into home at about 1:30 am as it was.

June 16,2007

HOT HOT HOT. The weather stations fore casted 90 and humid. In a remote location in Iowa, with no shade for miles unless you brought your own, it meant HOT HOT HOT.  Joshua's Grandma, who lives for the summer heat, was overcome and had to leave early. 90 was conservative, humid was accurate. (She also had gotten stung by a bee, which may not have helped)

What all this heat means is a dry, dusty track. After the 1st round of heat racing ant time trials, the track officials decided to water the track down to keep the dust under control. I had kind of seen this coming, and changed to a harder compound tire.  It seemed to work real well, Josh came back from the Hot Lap session saying it felt faster than ever. He finished 2nd in the heat race, and 4th in the trophy dash, and 4th in the main. I had changed his gearing before the trophy dash, and left it on for the feature. The tach said I made the right decision, but the results made me question it. Kart was hard to start again. I think I have figured that out.

The driving I saw from young Joshua today made me very proud. It proves you can drive a race car and really not race, or you can drive a race car AND race. They are very different. I saw the 2nd one today, lotta racing, to try and get around the other cars, looking for a way high, then if that didn't work, low. Or vice versa, He also got up in the marbles today, something he has never experienced. He held it together well. At Jamaica Raceway in his 1st year of driving, there was a loose part of the surface up near the top, but since it was asphalt, it wasn't marbles, and it didn't act like this. He did a GREAT job of holding it together and keeping his position.

Friday the 13th July 2007

Great racing tonight, we are getting the car sorted out. On the way to the track, I told Josh he was the only driver in his class that hadnt yet spun or been involved in a caution.

The 1st heat looked real good, Joshua finished 2nd behind his friend Conner McCarty.  That set up the start of the trophy dash with those two inverted to the back. Joshua started to come through the pack pretty good, but only made it to 4th before the checkers flew. He put behind him some of the fastest drivers in the class, it was a good run, just cut short by the number of laps (6)

The feature promised to be a good one. Everyone was hungry for the win. Joshua and Jonathan Hughes were making their way through the pack. They entered turns 1 and 2, jonathan went high, Joshua went low, and Joshua spun, bringing out the yellow and sending him to the back. When the green fell again, Josh began making his way back to the front, passing wherever he found room. Again, the race was cut short by the checkered flag (12 laps) and he finished 5th, with the season points leader amongst those behind him.

WE WON !
we picked up a win in the heat race, 1st in of the year. All our hard work preparing and drivingthe Outlaw Kart is starting to pay off
Then, in the Trophy Dash, there were a couple incidents involving other race cars, not ours. However, this meant a fair amount of tim idling and burnig Methanol fuel. A lap or two after the green flag fell, our kart began to run crappy. It sounded like the spark plug was fouling. Joshua finished the race, and I changed the spark plug, then checked the fuel. He was out of fuel !
Them, in the feature, Josh was running up by the front, when Brooke Mitrisin, Conner McCarty, and Katelyn Smith were involved in a crash in turns 1 and 2. This brought out the 1st red flag of the season for rge Restricted class. The track officials got everything cleaned up, some fast repairs were made to the Mitrisin car, and Brooke and Conner came back out to finish the feature. On the restart, Josh found himself racing in 3rd place, and maintained that position until the white flag lap, when the 76 car of Jonathan Hughes passed him on the back chute. Josh made a good run or two to get his position back, but eventually finished the feature in 4th position.

july 27,2007

well, here we go. A bad day racing is still better than a good day workin', and tonight proved it.
Rains hit Thursday night, and Friday morning. As of noonish Friday, the track was being compared to a pond. The track people did a fabulous job working the track, and giving us a racing surface for Friday night. Just before race time, there was a short but hard cloudburst that generated a fair amount of rain, and they did a great job again of making a raceable track out of it. They developed a fairly narrow, tacky surface that everyone seemed to like.
Everyone but us. This is our 1st year on dirt, and our 1st year with changing track surfaces. We really didnt know what to do to adapt to the surface, so, except for adding 1 tooth on the axle gear, and keeping the tires pumped up good, we left the car alone. We finished in the back half of the field in the heat, second outta 3 in the trophy dash, and had even more problems for the feature.
We lined up for the feature, and the kart seemed to be running ok. when they pulled out on the track, it seemed ok, but when the field went to follow the pace vehicle to th green flag, it stalled. I was allowed on teh track to start it. Then more delays, and when they went to go, it stalled again. They pushed him into the infield and we recieved a DNS. After the race, I looked over the car, and it appears it was loaded up. That is like flooded. It seems that the cars closest to the grid cant get there until the gate opens, so the rest of the field sit and idles. Then, all that fuel can cause problems. There has been talk of it before, and I think I may have ben a victim of it tonight. If I would have revved it good when I got it started, and cleared it out we may have raced, but I didnt know that then ....  like they say,
"if ifs and buts was candy and nuts, we'd have christmas every day"
whats done is done.
we'll do better next week.

SEPT 8, 2007
There had been a substatial layoff, with the Nationals and being rained out. During that time, they had been forced to rework the track due to extremely heavy rains having done some damage. We had raced at Newton and I thought I identified the ned for some chassis adjustments. I also have a pretty good idea by now of what gears to take with me to this track, so I made my adjustments and didnt take much in the way of extra gears. With the track changes, my car changes, and the lack of preperation, we simply didnt do very well at all tonight. But we raced and had a great time, and thats hat we are there for.

no rain ! The Arlo Goff Memorial will run !
Arlo Goff was a part of the Columbia Fire and Rescue team that serves English Creek Speedway. His life was cut short when he was hit by a train. Dan commemerates his life and service with an annual event in his name, and Joshua will now display a decal in his memory on the back of the seat of his Winged Outlaw Kart.

we started out looking pretty good in hot laps. When Josh came off teh track, the kart died and had to be pushed back to the pit. It was determined that at least a part of the fuel pickup tube had came off the carb and fallen into the fuel tank. It was also determined that with a full tank of gas, the car would run. So I fueled it up, and went to the grid. We let the car run as we always do, and the National Anthem played. Then the racrs went out on the track, and the green flag flew. Several laps into the 1st heat, there was a caution brought out by an incident in turn 3, and the racers were left to idle. Upon the restart, Josh was working on the eventual 2nd place racer when his kart ran out of (useable) fuel, sending him to the infield.
Then in the trophy dash, we knew not to let it run, but keep the tank completely full. That int real good, as the excessive fuel level blocks the vent hole on the fuel tank, and teh engine performs poorly in the corners. We were able to finish 5th in the Trophy dash, despite having a huge fuel problem.
In order to maintain our 3th place points standing for the year, it was required that we take the green flag in the feature. So we did, the kart ran ok, and he was able to finish the race on the available fuel, but it did run poorly in the corners, but still Joshua finished 4th in a kart that really should have been back on the trailer immediately following Hot Laps. Everyone that saw the problem agreed there would be no racing cuz there would be no fuel delivery. Upon disassembly, it as determined there was NO long Pickup tube in the tank, onlythe short one. We could only draw about 1/16" off fuel off the top of the tank.
The results for the night are as follows:

A-Main 01 --  1. Brooke Mitrisin, Oskaloosa; 2. Kelby Watt, Adel; 3. Colten Roorda, Sully; 4. Alexis Mills, Altoona; 5. Joshua Moffitt, Des Moines; 6. Caitlyn Shilling, Knoxville.

There is a lot of talk about how setup on thes karts differs from a flat kart. We have ran all year under a pretty unconventional setup. We talked with the Tim Strayer, father of future big time racer Jake Strayer, and he suggested our kart wasnt free enough in the corners and needed some setup changes. So I set it up for today with more conventional numbers.
It seemed good in hot laps, and was running 3rd in the 1st heat, moving to 2nd when the 25 car of Alexis Mills spun in front of Joshua. Josh did his best to avoid trouble, but wound up drilling the right side of Lexi's car, eventually bringing out the red flag. It took the English Creek Speedway crew of 5 or 6 people approximately 5 minutes to get the cars apart. during that time, the officials decided to shut off Joshua's engine, and when it was time to go back to yellow to line up, the decision was made bythe officials and Josh's family NOT to restart the 53 car until a full asessmaent of damage was complete. This breas out teh safety of these cars, however, as this was a substantial incident, and Josh was completely uninjured and physically and emotionally ready to race again for the trophy dash.
The driver of the 25 car sustained an apprently minor injury to her right elbow, during the incident her elbow hit the engine. She, too, was ready to race.
Josh finished the day with a couple decent finishes, 3rd in the dash, and 4th in the feature.

9/30/2007
Last race of the Season at English Creek Speedway

my setup numbers were unchanged from 9.29.07, except I removed 10 lbs from the front. That should lower the weight, and lower the front percentage, yesterday our kart weighed 284 on a class minimum of 245. All year we have been at about 265. I aded weight to get the percentages where they should have been. Today we will try this. Its the last day of the season at this track, so we are going to try something new.
Turned out ok, but I think yesterday was a little better. the track wasnt as dry slick today, so that may have had something to do with it as well.
Oh well, season's over, cant tear the car down yet, though, 1 or 2 races left at Newton. The last of those is Oct 20th.
Been a fun season, and we are going to miss the track personnel, from the sign in girls to Dan the owner, to Big Mike, "Equalizer" lol ...
